HDR-HC3 can record and play back High Definition (HD) and Standard Definition (SD) video recorded on standard MiniDV cassette.

Real-Time HD Codec Engine

Sony has developed a system in real time MPEG Encode / Decodewith low power consumption and compact size to fit into a personal camcorder. This engine allows efficient MPEG2 compression, and recording and playback of clear pictures, HD at the same bit rate of the DV format, so that the high-definition video can be on the same MiniDV tapes used for recording SD recorded.
