HDR-HC3 can record and play back High Definition (HD) and Standard Definition (SD) video recorded on standard MiniDV cassette.

Real-Time HD Codec Engine

Sony has developed a system in real time MPEG Encode / Decodewith low power consumption and compact size to fit into a personal camcorder. This engine allows efficient MPEG2 compression, and recording and playback of clear pictures, HD at the same bit rate of the DV format, so that the high-definition video can be on the same MiniDV tapes used for recording SD recorded.

The optical zoom helps the action up close from far away. In addition the digital zoom interpolation means thatextreme digital zooming is clearer, with less distortion of previous types of digital zoom.
